The newest addition to St Andrews Links, The Castle Course opened in 2008 becoming the seventh course at the Home of Golf and was part of the Golf Monthly Top 100 within two years. Set on a rugged cliff-top with spectacular views over St Andrews, The Castle Course offers a memorable golfing experience. Kidd transformed flat, farm land into a rugged and seemingly pure links course where the finishing holes stand to become one of the finest in Scotland, including a massive double green home to the ninth and 18th holes.
Due to its elevated situation, the wind is even more influential here than down by the water, and the direction and strength will be key to any round. The course opens with a relatively gentle uphill par 4, before crossing the entrance road to a tough left-to-right dogleg with the first glimpses of the town beyond. The featured hole is the par three 17th, played across a ravine on the edge of the cliffs, into the prevailing wind from St Andrews. It really is an all or nothing hole where anything right is gone forever so the safe play is to aim left, where the contours will hopefully funnel the ball right to the putting surface.
