Until 1973, The Island Golf Club, bordered by the Irish Sea, Donabate Beach and Broadmeadow Estuary on three sides, had to be reached by boat from Malahide. For return, a signal was given to the boatman by hoisting a large red and white dial, which could be seen on the other side of the water. Thankfully, this North Dublin golfing gem is now more easily accessible and well worth the journey. It is so acessisible in fact that it can be reached in only 15 minutes from Dublin Airport making it an ideal first round on your day of arrival.
Founded in 1890, The Island course was recently revamped under Martin Hawtree who ensured that its true nature and character were enhanced. Splendidly isolated, The Island boasts the highest sand dunes of any links course in Ireland and is also known for having no two holes that are alike, a rare trait. Throughout its history, The Island has valued and protected its natural heritage, and as a result can now proudly claim to be one of the most stunning, natural and peaceful courses in Ireland.
